High School Corner for Wednesday October 31st 2012

Senior Prizegiving

The 2012 Senior Prizegiving will be held in the school assembly hall on Tuesday 6 November commencing at 1.00 pm. Parents and supporters are asked to be seated by 12.50 pm to allow a prompt start. Junior students are asked to remain at home unless they are involved in the prizegiving ceremony. Any junior students who wish can offer to help Mrs Howison with the AWD swimming event at the TSB pool.

Newsletter

All students were issued with a newsletter this week. A copy is also available on the school website stratfordhigh.ultranet.school.nz/home/ as well as from the Stratford and Eltham libraries or the main school office.

SHS TABLE TENNIS 2012

41 students took part in the inaugural 2012 SHS table tennis championship. The Junior Boys singles title was taken out by Matthew Holden beating a gallant Kody Simpson. Kody had his revenge in the doubles when combining with Quintin Bailey to overcome Quinlin Bosson-Thompson and Caleb McQuay in the final. Sarah Kowalewski was a clear cut winner in the Junior Girls singles over Jessica Taunt and then combined with Holly Mackie to beat Jessica and Katie Taylor in the doubles final.
Matthew Sullivan-Brown was too strong for Ryk Ferguson in the Senior Boys singles and Thomas Ferguson with Jarvis Gotty beat Ryk and Jordan Haakma in the doubles. Hannah Martin managed to beat Aimee Hinton in the Senior Girls singles but Aimee came back with Rebekah Frost to win over Hannah and Laureen Cox in the doubles. A good event for a first time and hopefully 2013 will see an increase in participation. We would like to thank Pub Charity for the grant which enabled the school to purchase the tables which have been well used in PE classes, lunchtime activities and the school tournament.

Enviro Roopu

The Enviro Roopu recently planted 10 trees from the Paper4trees: Carbon Reduction Programme. The trees that we planted along the Carrington Walkway were individually chosen by each student. The day’s selection included Totara, Makomako, Hebe and Ake Ake. Our trees stood strong amongst the others once planted, ready for the next visit. The students really enjoyed working in the sun, and hanging out with the others.

As a part of our Social Studies community and environmental awareness activities, Year 9 and 10 students are about to engage in a clean-up initiative around Stratford. This is occurring at the end of term as part of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week campaign (http://cleanup.knzb.org.nz).

For future activities in our community, we are seeking donations of native plants eg trees, shrubs and flax (Harakeke). These could be left over riparian plants or ones that you have removed from the garden or fence line. Please contact Miss Sullivan if you are interested in donating or be in some way involved with our Enviro Roopu. Email sj@stratfordhigh.school.nz or phone the school.

Lets Cook with Parmco.

We need your vote

Dear Parents,
Help us win a classroom full of kitchen appliances!
We’ve joined the brand new Let’s Cook with Parmco programme, hosted by Brett McGregor to help get our kids into the kitchen to learn a few new skills and try some fun recipes. Plus, there’s over $150,000 of prizes to be won!
The programme is underway and runs until the 25th September.  It includes Brett’s weekly cooking challenges with video tutorials and recipes, weekly prizes for participatingstudents, and our very own page on the Let’s Cook site to celebrate our students’ cooking successes.

Vote and you could win a luxury family break!

For our school to win a classroom full of kitchen appliances, we need to get as many people as possible to go online and vote for our school.  As an incentive, Let’s Cook has got two fantastic prizes up for grabs for everyone who votes for a school. Fancy a luxury break at one of New Zealand's most exclusive hotels, with a behind-the-scenes cooking masterclass at Simon Gault's latest restaurant, FISH?

So please visit the Let’s Cook site and vote for our school before the 25th September. It’s one vote per person, so please vote.  We’d also love your help to spread the word, so please tell your friends, family and neighbours to vote for us as well! You can also join the Facebook "ParmcoLetsCook" and follow the competition.

NB. To keep things fair, our school is categorised with other schools of a similar size. And remember, the schools with the most votes in each category win the Parmco prize pack.

Thank you so much for your help.

Year 8 Open Evening.

Last Tuesday, 24th July we were pleased to welcome many Year 8 students, their parents and families to our Open Evening. Groups were guided around the school by senior students to see displays, view the classrooms and other facilities and experience the atmosphere of our school. Many thanks to the New Caledonia students who supplied the supper and to the number of students and staff who made this evening a success. Many parents were impressed with the open, friendly and respectful relationships shown by staff and students.

At the end of the evening there was a prize draw for tickets to the first Tenderlink Taranaki Ranfurly Shield challenge in Inglewood. The winners of the double passes were: Brandy Phillips (Eltham), Elizabeth Martin, Kyra Shadbolt (Stratford), Ryan Joll (Kaponga) and Nathan Roy (Midhirst). Miss Kay had organised a scavenger hunt and the ten prizes were won by: Alex, Danielle, Holly, Ben, Jordan, Demi, Jesse, Cody, Jessica and Josh.

Mrs Butler, Guidance Counsellor and Year 9 Intake Dean will be starting her school visits later this term. Enrolment forms will be sent to contributing schools shortly and collected during these visits. If you missed the open evening and would like to tour the school please contact the school office to make an appointment.
