Fundraiser for Sports Council

SHS SPORTS COUNCIL
A new initiative at Stratford High School for 2014 is a Sports Council which will include staff and students, who will work towards providing more sporting opportunities and improving facilities at the school, for the benefit of all students and the community.
The first fundraising event is for a fund to resurface the netball/tennis court area with synthetic turf, making it an all-purpose area. This will be selling Canterbury track pants and shorts as per the attached order form.
We envisage that this area could then be used by hockey and football teams for practices as well as our school netball and tennis teams. Many community clubs and groups also use this area for practices and competitions outside school hours so it would also be of great benefit to the community.

Of course this is a huge project and we will apply for funding from other organisations to help finance it. We would also like to install lighting to extend the hours of usage available.

These track pants will not replace any part of the Stratford High School uniform and therefore are not to be worn in this manner. However, it is our intention that students travelling to sports and TSSSA events are not in mufti, but in a sports uniform; a school top or jacket (provided on the day) and black shorts or track pants to maintain a tidy and respectable dress standard. The shorts can be used for both PE and rugby.
Please support this fundraising initiative by approaching family, friends and neighbours to place orders.
Pricing, dates and other details are on the order form; available from the school office, student office and sports office or the school website. Please return order forms with the correct money to the student office by Friday 16th May. Thanking you in advance.

Netball Happenings

On Saturday 28th April, five Stratford High School teams took part in a pre-season tournament in New Plymouth. 3A and Allsorts were winners of their respective grades. A, B and 4A competed well and appreciated the early chance to try new combinations and skills.

The following Stratford High School students were named in the Stratford Under 15 Representative Team: Gracyn Meredith, Beth West, Emily Short, Tamsin Burt, Rhiannon Rhodes, Tessa Smith, Christine McIvor, Tylah Graham and Emma Paton. Christine and Beth were injured before the tournament and therefore were unable to play. The others played extremely well and although they only won one game they did Stratford proud. Gracyn Meredith was selected to trial for the Taranaki Under 15 team.

On Sunday 13th May six teams travelled to New Plymouth to play in the TSSSA tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity for our teams to challenge themselves against the other secondary schools in Taranaki. Our most successful team were the Boys A team, winning two games and losing one game. This put them in second overall. Strikers were third in their grade. 3A played four games, won three and lost one. 4A recorded one win and two losses. School A and School B recorded no wins but demonstrated some fantastic skill against some tough competition.

With all the tournaments we have been attending we have relied heavily on coaches, managers, supporters, parents, caregivers and umpires. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported and encouraged our teams over the last few weeks. In particular the following umpires: Barb Digby, Maria Swan, Nicola Duthie, Tracey Dorne, Glenda Zimmerman, Tracy Kivell, Nadine Smith and Robyn Davey.

Finally we have made an application to the ANZ bank to purchase jackets for our volunteer managers and coaches. The success of our application is reliant on votes from our supporters. To do this you need to go online and vote for our application via the following link: http://anznetball.co.nz/gransche/gallery-application/application.html?id=17585. You are able to make one vote a day. So please get voting.

Senior Prizegiving winners.

Adrian, Natasha and Daniel after Tuesday's prizegiving.
The senior prizegiving is over for another year and with an audience of 260 parents, grandparents and supporters it was an exciting time for the top students at our school.
Adrian Pitman was awarded Dux for 2011 while Natasha Sinclair-Taikato was named Proxime Accessit.

Daniel Stieller was awarded the Roodbeen Trophy as the e best all round senior student who shows dedication and commitment to the general life of the school. The Citation follows:
This year’s recipient has been one of the student leaders of the Relay for Life, he has been involved in school activities such as the Student Council, the Ball Committee, the Peak Committee, the 40 Hour Famine, the Variety Concert, the 2010 Stage Challenge. He has also participated in a wide variety of Interhouse sporting activities. All of these have given this young man a high profile both in and outside of the school.
He is a conscientious young man who has a great sense of social responsibility and has proven himself to be a person who puts ‘ideas into action’. He has shown an ability to motivate and help people in such a way that any task he has undertaken has had a successful conclusion.
He is certainly dedicated and committed to our school and has been a fine ambassador for Stratford High School and a worthy recipient of this award.

Senior Sports winners were Taylor Bailey - sports woman of the year, Hamish Walker - sportsman of the year and Zack Taitoko - SHS Sportsperson for 2011.

They are currently waiting on confirmation for their place in the Chess Power Interschool National Championship to be held in Auckland on October 4th.

Poutama
We were recently privileged to have Shane Jordan as a guest speaker at our Poutama assembly. A Stratford High School old boy, Shane Jordan has been chopping since he was 15 years old. He told us that he developed an interest when Bruce Reichardt from Douglas was training some young guys at school.

When he left school, Shane trained as a helicopter engineer and went to work in Taupo. He was fortunate to have a great coach and mentor who spent his days sourcing wood for Shane to chop. Shane stressed the importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in the dreams you have for yourself. Shane cuts hundreds of training logs, spends many early mornings at the gym and late nights adjusting and perfecting his equipment. This training ensures he is physically and mentally prepared. He has kept very many people in firewood along the way.

He has competed and represented NZ in the USA, Spain, Austria and Australia. He has held numerous titles throughout the North Island and was also a member of the NZ team which set a new World record in Austria. He showed us a video of how he achieved his goal of competing in the American Stihl series. Shane told us he was planning an attempt at a New Zealand record in Inglewood in a few weeks’ time. We have since learned that he achieved his goal. In the standing block he carved close to two seconds off the previous record, set in 2005, of 18.63s. Shane's mark is 16.64s.

Shane’s advice for our students was that they can do anything they want to if they believe in themselves and set their mind to it.

Latest news

Daffodil Day Volunteers
Once again, students volunteered their services to assist the Stratford Cancer Society with the luncheon and selling of flowers for 2011 Daffodil Day. Thanks to Alison Matthews, Andrew Hunger, Amy Luckhurst, Elizabeth Corbett, Shannon Morrow-Washer, Melissa Coull-Herewini, Jessica Nicholas, Christine Podjursky and Michaela Dormer for providing this valuable community service on behalf of our school.

Lara Williams:
Taranaki Female Hockey Player
of the Year 2011

Taranaki Female Hockey Player of the Year
On 27 August Taranaki Hockey held their annual club awards evening. The criteria for the player of the year awards were that you needed to represent Taranaki in some way, show great skill, talent and be a team player. It is a difficult award to receive as there are 8 clubs with a total of 112 players vying for the honour. It was with great excitement and shock that Lara Williams received this award for 2011.

As part of her commitment to hockey, Lara played for SHS Girls 1st XI, captained the Taranaki Under 15 team and was tournament player of the week as well as Most Valuable Player for the second year.

Congratulations
To Laureen Cox who was 3rd in the TSSSA Senior Girls Road Cycle champs and also won one of the spot prizes on the day.

To Sarah Cooper, Melissa Coull-Herewini, Rebecca Poole, Daniel Stieller, Kate Thomas who were presented with Peak 2011 bars as acknowledgement of their involvement in the production of the school magazine this year.

To Josh Hunger and Quinlin Bosson-Thompson who were selected for the Taranaki Under 14 rugby team. They play against a visiting Australian school next Thursday in Tikorangi. Scott Caskey and Jarvis Gotty are in the Under 16 team and Adrian Pitman was selected for the Taranaki Under 18 team.
