Parent - Teacher Partnership rules #6
Rule 6: Support your child’s teacher and school
Promoting the school at every opportunity can be done at the basic level by parents encouraging healthy attitudes towards school in their own children, as well as friends and the community.
• Know the policies and values of your child’s school.
• Talk about the importance of policies and values in the home with your child.
• Mirror the rules and consequences of the school in the home.
• Promote the school to your child to encourage a healthy attitude.
Many elements combine to enable children to gain a quality education that provides them with a platform for their future lives, not the least of which is the opportunity to experience their schooling with the full support of their teachers and parents.
I hope that you have enjoyed these rules and will apply them to your relationship with your student, their teachers and the school.

Communication
Communication
During term one we trialled a number of ways to improve communication between home and school. The major initiative was to use a programme from the Ministry of Education called Early Notification System (ENS). This is a process where, if a student is away for Period 1 without explanation, families receive a text massage. This way you can know quickly when your child is not at school. However, to make this work well, we need to have up to date cell phone numbers for parents. Can you please contact the student office to ensure we have your current number? You can also email absence@stratfordhigh.school.nz if this is more convenient.
We are in the early stages of using this system (ENS) and apologise if a message is sent in error. However, we feel that our families deserve to know when their child is not in school, so we hope this will keep our children here rather than wagging. After all we are here to learn.
We believe that good communications between the school and its community are very important. If you have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting us either by phone, email or visiting the school. If your concerns relate to your son/daughter’s attendance, behaviour or academic progress, the form teacher or the relevant year level dean is the best person to contact in the first instance. For our part we will keep in contact through the newsletters, written reports on your son/daughter, parent & teacher evenings, the school website and blog and Stratford Press High School Corner.
Newsletters will arrive via email from the start of next term. If you have given the school an email address you will no longer receive a hard copy unless it is posted with reports. If you have changed your email address recently please advise us of your new one. If you do not think the school has your email address please advise the office.
If you would prefer to receive a hard copy of newsletters please let us know so you can be added to the listing for form teachers. The first newsletter of the year is usually posted to all parents.
Rule 3: Partner with your child’s teacher.
Children who do best at school are the ones who have parents (at home) and teachers (at school) working closest together.
• Teachers describe parent-teacher relationships as essential, vital and critical.
• Positive links between parents and teachers create positive attitudes to school.
• Your involvement will help your child’s progress at school, build trust and resolve differences.
• Parent-teacher partnerships, like any teamwork, benefit from communication.

Activity Week
The annual Activity Week has finished and students and staff have had a myriad of experiences both in and out of school. Following is a report from The Masterchef Challenge who finished on Thursday with an amazing display of dishes.
MasterChef Challenge
This week
long of cooking fun has seen many of us improving, tasting, and cook new and
exciting food. On the first day we had fun on the computers and designed and
made a personalised apron, it was cool to see our designs being put on our
aprons. Later in the day Miss MacDonald and Miss Ashton had plenty of laughs as
they watched us blindfolded student’s reactions to some of the mystery taste
testing, especially when the beef tongue was being eaten!
On the
second day, we had a full on day of cooking, for a breakfast challenge we had
to make a 3-egg omelette. For a few people this was a new experience, we then
presented them to the judges who judged them on presentation and taste. We then
made cute little gift boxes, which we baked very yummy banana cakes to put into
them with delicious chocolate icing, yum. For lunch we made a well-known
favourite…butter chicken curry.
On the third
day, we had another mystery cooking challenge. We all got given an envelope
with two recipes inside, pancakes or hot cakes. Once again, this was a popular
favourite and we also presented them for judging. Due to the weather, we were
not able to go for a walk to the park and have a picnic lunch of fish and
chips, however Miss MacDonald was kind enough to drive up and still get our fish
and chips.
On the
fourth and final day we all pulled out our recipes and put our MasterChef
skills to the test as we had to make our signature dish for guest judges. We
had 2 and a half hours to bring ingredients of our choice to life and make a
delicious dish to present. We had a wide variety of foods from fettuccini to
green pavlovas. The smells coming from this room was sensational!
All in all
it was very fun, yummy, challenging week. A well recommended activity for
future chefs, whether you want to improve your cooking skills or just eat yummy
food, there’s something everyone will enjoy.
Emily, Tamia, Taylah, Alex, Terry, Krissie, Tayla, Jade, Lesley, Caleb wearing their masterchef aprons. |
A big
thank-you to Miss MacDonald and Miss Ashton for putting up with a bunch of
creative experimenting chefs for four days. Thank you.

SHS TABLE TENNIS 2012
41 students took part in the inaugural 2012 SHS table
tennis championship. The Junior Boys singles title was taken out by Matthew
Holden beating a gallant Kody Simpson. Kody had his revenge in the doubles when
combining with Quintin Bailey to overcome Quinlin Bosson-Thompson and Caleb
McQuay in the final. Sarah Kowalewski was a clear cut winner in the Junior
Girls singles over Jessica Taunt and then combined with Holly Mackie to beat
Jessica and Katie Taylor in the doubles final.
Matthew
Sullivan-Brown was too strong for Ryk Ferguson in the Senior Boys singles and
Thomas Ferguson with Jarvis Gotty beat Ryk and Jordan Haakma in the doubles.
Hannah Martin managed to beat Aimee Hinton in the Senior Girls singles but
Aimee came back with Rebekah Frost to win over Hannah and Laureen Cox in the
doubles. A good event for a first time and hopefully 2013 will see an increase
in participation. We would like to thank Pub Charity for the grant
which enabled the school to purchase the tables which have been well used in PE
classes, lunchtime activities and the school tournament.

Enviro Roopu
The Enviro Roopu recently planted 10 trees from the Paper4trees: Carbon Reduction Programme. The trees that we planted along the Carrington Walkway were individually chosen by each student. The day’s selection included Totara, Makomako, Hebe and Ake Ake. Our trees stood strong amongst the others once planted, ready for the next visit. The students really enjoyed working in the sun, and hanging out with the others.
As a part of our Social Studies community and environmental awareness activities, Year 9 and 10 students are about to engage in a clean-up initiative around Stratford. This is occurring at the end of term as part of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week campaign (http://cleanup.knzb.org.nz).
For future activities in our community, we are seeking donations of native plants eg trees, shrubs and flax (Harakeke). These could be left over riparian plants or ones that you have removed from the garden or fence line. Please contact Miss Sullivan if you are interested in donating or be in some way involved with our Enviro Roopu. Email sj@stratfordhigh.school.nz or phone the school.

Lets Cook with Parmco.
We need your vote
Dear
Parents,
Help us win a
classroom full of kitchen appliances! We’ve joined the brand new Let’s Cook with Parmco programme, hosted by Brett McGregor to help get our kids into the kitchen to learn a few new skills and try some fun recipes. Plus, there’s over $150,000 of prizes to be won!
The programme is underway and runs until the 25th September. It includes Brett’s weekly cooking challenges with video tutorials and recipes, weekly prizes for participatingstudents, and our very own page on the Let’s Cook site to celebrate our students’ cooking successes.
For
our school to win a classroom full of kitchen appliances, we need to get as
many people as possible to go online and vote for our school. As an incentive, Let’s Cook has got two
fantastic prizes up for grabs for everyone who votes for a school. Fancy a
luxury break at one of New Zealand's most exclusive hotels, with a
behind-the-scenes cooking masterclass at Simon Gault's latest restaurant, FISH?
So
please visit the Let’s Cook site and vote for our school before the 25th
September. It’s one vote per person, so please vote. We’d also love your help to spread the word,
so please tell your friends, family and neighbours to vote for us as well! You can also join the Facebook "ParmcoLetsCook" and follow the competition.
NB. To keep things fair, our school is
categorised with other schools of a similar size. And remember, the schools
with the most votes in each category win the Parmco prize pack.
Thank you so much for your help.

Year 8 Open Evening.
Last Tuesday, 24th July we were pleased to welcome many Year 8 students, their parents and families to our Open Evening. Groups were guided around the school by senior students to see displays, view the classrooms and other facilities and experience the atmosphere of our school. Many thanks to the New Caledonia students who supplied the supper and to the number of students and staff who made this evening a success. Many parents were impressed with the open, friendly and respectful relationships shown by staff and students.
At the end of the evening there was a prize draw for tickets to the first Tenderlink Taranaki Ranfurly Shield challenge in Inglewood. The winners of the double passes were: Brandy Phillips (Eltham), Elizabeth Martin, Kyra Shadbolt (Stratford), Ryan Joll (Kaponga) and Nathan Roy (Midhirst). Miss Kay had organised a scavenger hunt and the ten prizes were won by: Alex, Danielle, Holly, Ben, Jordan, Demi, Jesse, Cody, Jessica and Josh.
Mrs Butler, Guidance Counsellor and Year 9 Intake Dean will be starting her school visits later this term. Enrolment forms will be sent to contributing schools shortly and collected during these visits. Literacy Challenge In Hawera
NZ Books, Fiction or Non-fiction – Read Them All!
A group of ten students ventured down to Hawera one sunny Monday not so long ago. We were the two teams our school was entering into the annual Taranaki Literacy Challenge (the first entries in a number of years).
Each team of five had to read 10 books over a period of about three months. The books were finalists in the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards 2012 competition. Five were fiction and five were non-fiction. Organising which book was going to who and when got very messy - especially towards the end.
When it came to the day we had to answer many different questions relating to all the books. This was a challenge to many of us and a total breeze for others. The day was filled with laughter and excitement. Unfortunately we did not get a placing, however it was loads of fun and great experience.

Netball Happenings
On Saturday 28th April, five Stratford High School teams took part in a pre-season tournament in New Plymouth. 3A and Allsorts were winners of their respective grades. A, B and 4A competed well and appreciated the early chance to try new combinations and skills.
The following Stratford High School students were named in the Stratford Under 15 Representative Team: Gracyn Meredith, Beth West, Emily Short, Tamsin Burt, Rhiannon Rhodes, Tessa Smith, Christine McIvor, Tylah Graham and Emma Paton. Christine and Beth were injured before the tournament and therefore were unable to play. The others played extremely well and although they only won one game they did Stratford proud. Gracyn Meredith was selected to trial for the Taranaki Under 15 team.
On Sunday 13th May six teams travelled to New Plymouth to play in the TSSSA tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity for our teams to challenge themselves against the other secondary schools in Taranaki. Our most successful team were the Boys A team, winning two games and losing one game. This put them in second overall. Strikers were third in their grade. 3A played four games, won three and lost one. 4A recorded one win and two losses. School A and School B recorded no wins but demonstrated some fantastic skill against some tough competition.
With all the tournaments we have been attending we have relied heavily on coaches, managers, supporters, parents, caregivers and umpires. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported and encouraged our teams over the last few weeks. In particular the following umpires: Barb Digby, Maria Swan, Nicola Duthie, Tracey Dorne, Glenda Zimmerman, Tracy Kivell, Nadine Smith and Robyn Davey.
Finally we have made an application to the ANZ bank to purchase jackets for our volunteer managers and coaches. The success of our application is reliant on votes from our supporters. To do this you need to go online and vote for our application via the following link: http://anznetball.co.nz/gransche/gallery-application/application.html?id=17585. You are able to make one vote a day. So please get voting.

Relay 4 Life 2012
Well, there sure was a lot of mud. If I try and recall a picture of the Relay for Life 2012, held at the Pukekura Raceway from midday Saturday 24 to midday Sunday 25 of March, that is the first thing that I see.
Certainly, that’s not all that comes to mind, though. The smiles, the camaraderie, the sense of a team spirit. The rubbish-bag-manufactured clothing, duct-taped tarpaulins and cable ties. The heartache of hearing bagpipes while standing in the soft candlelight of the remembrance ceremony. The rain-filled socks (soaks?) and shoes, warm water squelching around feet as we walked on the tar-sealed car park, after the mud became ankle deep in places by 10:30 at night, and so was deemed too dangerous. Finding myself walking through the rain in time to Sacha Baron-Coen singing, ‘I like to move-it-move-it,’ as Madagascar played on the big screen during the wee-small hours of Sundays morning. Cheering for Beth-el, Jessica, Kyle, Mr Fergusson and the others from the Stratty team who took it to the Relay Idol stage at different points over the weekend.
And aside from these few snapshots from my memory, there are all the others of the fundraising and preparation and lead up to the event, on top of the fine form that the event itself was carried out in. But really, you’d expect nothing less from such a dedicated crew from one of New Zealand’s top high school communities (at around 300 metres above sea-level – or 1,010 feet at the old railway station, as Mr. Caldwell informs me).
With fundraising and Easter-egg raffle tickets still coming in, we don’t have a final figure for the funds raised yet, but prior to the Relay itself, a little over $3,500 was banked with the Taranaki Cancer Society. This money will go to support those who have to deal with cancer in their lives, and in the lives of those they love. While not yet complete, this nevertheless is a substantial effort, and everyone who has contributed can be proud of the part they have played this year.
My thanks to all in the team, those who have participated, and who helped us out. This group of people includes the Alexander and O’Carroll families, who along with Mr. Smith loaned us the tents which were essential to the success of the weekend. There are the parents who braved the weather to stay with us, Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs Duthie. Also the student leaders Cameron, Laura, Leah, Nicole, Nikayla and Andrew, who helped out and gained invaluable experience of working together in adverse conditions. And to the staff involved, whether it was helping with meetings at school, dropping it to say hi at the Raceway, helping us put up (and later modify) the tents, assist with management and supervision overnight, or help with the vital pack-up. My especial thanks to four staff for their indefatigable support both prior to and at the event: Mrs. Broadmore for your sanity with paperwork; Ms Rawlinson for your willingness to step in and make things work where it was needed; Miss Kay for your positivity and pragmatic organising; and Mr. Walker for your practical nous and ability to make things happen. You guys are awesome!
